Curio Cards: The First Art NFTs on Ethereum Curio Cards is widely recognized as the first art NFT project on the Ethereum blockchain, launched on May 9, 2017 six weeks before CryptoPunks. Created by Thomas Hunt, Travis Uhrig, and Rhett Creighton, the project was designed as an online art gallery to support digital artists and introduce the concept of blockchain-based art ownership. The Collection Curio Cards consists of 30 unique art pieces from seven artists (including Cryptograffiti, Cryptopop, and others), produced in limited editions ranging from 111 to over 2,000 copies each, for a total supply of 29,700 cards. Inspired by traditional trading cards, each card features vibrant, eclectic digital artwork and was originally priced between $0.50 and $1. The project pioneered several foundational NFT concepts: • Direct artist-to-collector sales with 100% of primary sales going to artists (no platform fees at the time) • IPFS storage for permanence • Minting directly from smart contracts • Early influence on the ERC-721 standard Historical Significance Long before the 2021 NFT boom, Curio Cards demonstrated that digital art could be scarce, ownable, and tradable on-chain. A complete set of 30 cards sold at Christie’s Post-War to Present auction in October 2021 for 393 ETH (approximately $1.27 million at the time), bringing mainstream attention to this early gem. Today, Curio Cards remains a beloved piece of NFT history a true “blue-chip vintage” collection treasured by serious collectors for its cultural importance and pioneering spirit. In a space that moves fast, Curio Cards stands as proof that some of the most influential projects were built quietly in the very beginning.
